- [Tony] Mm-hmm.
(upbeat music) (folder rustles) - You two picked up Brink's-Mat?
- Boyce is a trustworthy, by-the-book police officer.
He believes in right and wrong, justice, and doing the right thing by society.
- I don't wanna be wondering which of my team are Masons, which are on the take, and which are both.
- There's a huge amount of corruption within that particular unit, so when Boyce turns up, he's very much aware of the Flying Squad's reputation and fully intends to drain it.
- No, thank you.
- What's great about the relationship with Jennings and Brightwell is that initially he sees them as young pups who are, you know, wet behind the ears, and he needs experienced people.
Then he takes a punt on them, and he invites them on board.
- Early start tomorrow.
- And gradually begins to see that they're cut from the right cloth.
- Is that a situation that would scare you, Jennings?
- No, sir.
- Nicki Jennings is a determined, clever, gritty woman.
She doesn't come from a well-to-do background.
She's working class, and her dad's a criminal.
She's straddling two worlds.
- Your father.
- It's not a problem, sir.
- They look for weak links.
- He's not a weak link.
Neither am I.
- If they know your dad, they've got leverage.
- Tony Brightwell is a detective inspector who's worked his way up the ranks in a pretty conventional way.
He took a pretty common route.
He's dedicated to his job.
He's very analytical.
He's very observant.
- Nice.
- [Charlotte] Jennings is very lucky to have Brightwell as a partner.
He accepts her pretty much immediately.
- My favorite thing about it is that they're almost like siblings.
It's a completely platonic relationship.
- Don't you mind, and gimme one of your sandwiches.
- No way.
I told you you need some.
- Oh, come on.
- You're punishing me for being prepared.
- I'll have the lot if you don't shut up.
- I don't think so.
- In terms of who is more dominant of that relationship, it's very much Jennings, and Brightwell is far more on the back foot.
- Jennings is quite feisty and always wants to kind of, you know, get the job done, and he kind of goes with it, which is nice.
I think it's a good dynamic.
- So a relationship that's based on trust, and I think often in police partnerships, there is that deep, deep bond.
It's almost familial, but it's also fun.
I mean, they have to spend the majority of their lives together.
They're working long, long days in intense circumstances, so their relationship is multifaceted.
- The three of them together, they are completely different characters, each one, and that's what makes it work.
- You are a fine pair of detectives, and I thought I should probably say that once.
(upbeat music) - Thank you, sir.
(smelter whirring) (upbeat music fades)
